Lymph Drainage Massage: I was recommended to have lymphodaema massage by my surgeon after a mastectomy and was lucky enough to find Cheryl, who practices locally to me, from the list of accredited therapists supplied by the Choices Breast Cancer programme at the Wesley Hospital. From the first visit I felt comfortable and as my chemotherapy treatment progressed, with its ups and downs, my weekly massages have become a real treat. Cheryl's expert fingers combine a really relaxing facial massage with a more therapeutic lymphatic massage and it gives me confidence that Cheryl is checking on any fluid retention at every visit and that I am doing the best I can for my body to regain its strength and keep the possibility of lymphodeama away.

I first noticed my Lymphoedema in my left arm early January 2015. I had had a Mastectomy in 2003, 11 lymph nodes were removed, and I then had 6 months of Chemotherapy and 30 treatments of Radiation , the breast cancer returned in October 2014, when 4 more nodes were removed, and 3 months of Chemotherapy. I found Cheryl Gilbert on the list of qualified Lymphoedema therapist on the Gold Coast and started treatment with her Mid January 2015.I was very concerned about the Lymphoedema as I had read a story of a women on the coast whose arm weighed 12 kilos, so I was very emotional when I began my first visit to Cheryl, I was still going through my Chemotherapy and my energy levels were low. I started on weekly treatments, and noticed an improvement almost immediately. When Cheryl told me about a product called a Reid Sleeve I felt I would benefit from purchasing it. I have been wearing the sleeve of a night for about 4 months now and have never regretted buying it and also brought the De Swell padding, this greatly assisted with the softening up of the fibrosis in certain areas. I now have cut my visits to every 10 days instead of weekly. My friends and family comment on how my arm is not as noticeable as it was 6 months ago and I can wear my long sleeve blouses and jumpers that I could not 6 months ago
Whilst all of the above has assisted in keeping my Lymphoedema under control I feel that it is the special connection that Cheryl has with her patients that is the greatest benefit to me. I feel we have a friendship that has developed so quickly and easily, her knowledge on health issues has been a great assistance to me and I feel so much better both physically and emotionally.. Thank you Cheryl.
